Write about a time you break: A bone
First, I have to say I don't wish anyone break a bone. It is very painful and can have long term affect even when you healed.
I never thought I would break a bone until the February of 1993. I was a daredevil when I was a child. Nothing could scary me. While other girls were playing babes and dress up, I was jumping off a 6 feet wall and walking on the edge of the second floor balcony. While other girls got lipsticks on their lips and nail polish on their nails, I got scars on my legs and bruises on my arms. But that didn't bother me much, kid heals fast after all. I am sure my parents was worried that I might hurt myself in a worse way which I eventually did, but in a way that I would never imagine.
The February of 1993, one month to my 13th birthday, my second semester as a middle-school student in one of the top schools in my hometown. The pressure from school was high, and I was not doing well. The Chinese New Year was on the 23rd of January, and the school just started its spring semester less than a month. But, the atmosphere on campus was already tense and heavy due to the overly high leveled knowledge (We were learning about math of college level). The teachers never smile to the students, and the competition between students were almost life and death. I hated that school until this day.
For a school which had grade 7 to grade 12, 6 classes in one grade and 60 students per class, its total students number was easily over 2000 and with its faculties and staffs, the total number of people might be close to 3000. You would think with that many people on campus, the school would have enough bathrooms. Guess in China, a person's value is lowered due to how many people we have. During the 10 minutes break between classes, hundreds students need to use the bathrooms. And, to keep the school's image good, the school decided to build a better and large bathroom outside of the main school building as an individual building. Why they had to close the bathrooms inside of the school building while they build the new bathroom? No one knows. Therefore, we all had to walk couple floors down, go out from our school building, went around a flower garden to be able to go to a already built bathroom in another part of school. That means we have 5 minutes to get there, 2 minutes to wait in line, 1 minutes to do the business and only 3 minutes to get back before next class starts. We all ran.
As for many times, we would use a shortcut to cut down the time on the way to and from the bathroom. This shortcut wasn't an easy way to go. It was the flower garden. Normally, the flower garden has no hampers to defeat, but it was piled with constriction materials (bricks, stones, metal weirs, tools, etc.) for the new bathroom now. We had no choice but went up and down those materials to get cross the garden. One day of the February, I did what I had been doing, went up and down those materials to go to bathroom. Then, it happened.
Everyone was hurrying, walking fast and passing each other. I was on top of a huge man made square stone and about to step down on a floor of cobblestones. A girl about my age bumped into me with her left shoulder while she came up to the stone which I was trying to get off. The bump was hard enough that it made my body twist while I landed my left foot on a huge cobblestone. The next thing I know was a level of pain that I never experience before came up from my left foot. I immediately started to tear up and couldn't walk. That girl didn't even look back and disappeared in the crow of students uniform. I looked down at my left foot and saw a huge swallowed ankle. I just learned how a broken bone would look like at my red cross after school program, so I knew my ankle was broken. I couldn't walk and was crying because the pain was so strong but there was no one stopped to help me. The youth of Chinese future were all so into their own selfish world that no one's problem is bigger than their own. (And those youth are the working force of China today) The bell rang, students started to run back. I saw couple boys from my class and they offered to tell the teacher that I will be late because I hurt myself. Then, they ran back to the school building. That was the most helps that they could do for me. I had tears in my eyes and couldn't put any weight on my left leg. The only thing that I could do was jump with my right leg. So, I did. Each jump vibrated my whole body which made my left foot more painful. I was very sad and crying not because my left foot hurt, but how cold people could be. Out of the hundreds of people passed me, no one offered any help.
Later on, when my mom took me to the hospital that I was told my left ankle bone was broken. I had to go to hospital couple times every week to change the Chinese medicine patch which made me missed classes. I actually was happy about that. If I hated that school 90% before, now I hated 100%. I used my broken ankle as an excuse to not going to classes nor do the homework. My left ankle healed after 3 months and also I was impossible to catch up with my classmates at school. I didn't go take the end of year exams and my parents transferred me to private school where I found my freedom later. I guess I should thank the girl who broke my ankle 'cause she helped me to leave that hell much faster!
That was my first time broke a bone. Yes, there is second time and my experience was so much different the second time around. I have been very careful after the second time and wish I never would have the 3rd time!
