I was driving behind a Mini Copper which moved very slowly on my way to the bookstore. My luck was the Mini Copper was going to the bookstore as well! I parked my car one car space away from the Mini Copper when we both arrived at the parking lot.
An over weight man came out from that little thing! He looked like he just got out of bed. Messy hair, didn't shave his face, dirty sport t-shirt, man's Capri and a whatever color sneaker. He walked slowly with a large size soda from a fast food restaurant.
The first thing I thought was he must not be married. And while I walked behind him to the bookstore, I paid attention on his left hand and saw his ring-less fingers.
When we reached the front door of bookstore, he opened the door and let it go quickly even though he knew I was right behind him! An old gentleman was in between the 2 doors of the bookstore, and he was watching us. He watched the over weight guy open the second door and let it go quickly again! Then, the old gentleman grabbed the closing door handle and held the door wide open and smiled to me. I thanked him and gave him a big sweet smile.
And now, I pretty much know the reason why the over weight guy is not married. It's not because he drives a car which makes him look funny, nor because he's over weight, nor has an unhealthy diet (lifestyle) or unattractive personal hygiene. It's because he had no manners, care, or respect for others. All he thought of was himself. Not the woman who walked behind him nor the older gentleman between the two doors.
Holding the door for a woman was the first thing that made me want to know more about American culture. And, the first time who held the door for me was an older gentleman as well. I like how a lot of older men (over 60 years old) are gentlemen in America. They respect and accept a woman, unlike a lot of younger boys and most Asian men who want woman to obey and want the woman to be the type they want.
I despise men who have no respect for woman but want woman to respect them. Respect, love, and trust are like a 2 way road. One way is a dead end.
So, guys, open the door when you see a woman walk behind you next time!
P.S. I hold the door for everyone when I walk into a building. It's not only a men thing. If a woman doesn't do it, I'd think that woman is careless. But if a man doesn't do it, I'd think that man is hopeless..
